Desire Is The Trap
The Ego’s primary objective is to enhance its self-image by acquiring more things, material possessions that go far beyond basic human necessities like food, water, shelter, and clothing. This unconscious ‘need’ creates our current consumer society and economic structures where the only measure of progress is more. As Eckhart Tolle wrote in A New Earth, “The unchecked striving for more, for endless growth, is a dysfunction and a disease. It is the same dysfunction the cancerous cell manifests, whose only goal is to multiply itself, unaware that it is bringing about its own destruction by destroying the organism of which it is part.” The collective expression of this global epidemic - the unchecked greed of the ego - is found in huge corporations whose only blind aim is profit.
