Since first picking up a paintbrush in the Spring of 2012, I’ve been fascinated by the expansion of my own consciousness and how these insights - inspired by my explorations into daily meditation and studies of eastern wisdom/mysticism - might intersect, impact, and direct the creative process.
My influence is drawn from two primary sources:
1. Ancient Hindu and Buddhist art (called ‘Thangkas’ in Tibetan Buddhism) that work like visual ‘teaching tools’ designed to inform and transform the consciousness of the viewer by lifting them into different states of awareness.
2. Parables and Fables: short, simple narratives designed to gently push us beyond the intellectual constraints of the mind and into the deeper roots of our common, shared consciousness.
My goal is to merge these two creative methods of instruction, expressed using situations and imagery that reflects our contemporary world. The transience of physical existence, the dangers of blindly catering to our egos, the realization of our innate divine nature, and the need to understand the inherent unity of all living beings, are just some of the concepts I’ve been exploring through these paintings.
My work also addresses the many questions raised by perceived reality, that hazy state of uncertainty where the potential to awaken is dependent on our willingness to draw back the veil of the material world and see into the subtler reaches of human consciousness and spirit. This new way of ‘seeing’ goes beyond the limitations of mere eyesight, unlocking an inner vision that not only transforms my consciousness from within, but directs me to take creative action.
Perhaps these contemplative Insight Parables - each one like a light strung along an endless path of self-discovery - might inspire others to arouse a similarly expansive realm within their own hearts and minds, the ultimate goal being a more fully awakened individual . . . one empowered with courage, wisdom, and compassion.
